What documents do I need to apply to a Chinese university?

The standard application package is: passport bio page, highest diploma, academic transcripts, a language certificate (HSK or IELTS/TOEFL depending on the language of instruction), a study plan, two recommendation letters, and the Foreigner Physical Examination Form. Art and design programmes also ask for a portfolio, and some universities require a non-criminal record certificate. Documents not in Chinese or English usually need a notarised translation.

When should I start applying to a Chinese university?

Start preparing about 10 months before the intake you want. Most Chinese universities open applications between December and April for a September start, and the Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) window usually runs from January to April. Autumn intake is the main one; a smaller spring intake exists at some universities, with applications around September to November.

什么时候开始申请中国大学最合适？

Can I apply to a Chinese university without an agent?

Yes. Every Chinese university accepts direct applications through its own online portal, and the CSC scholarship can be filed through the Chinese embassy in your country or directly with a designated university. An agency is not a requirement. What an agency adds is document checking, scholarship matching, and handling follow-up with the admissions office, which matters most when deadlines are tight or documents need authentication.

一定要通过中介才能申请中国大学吗？

不需要。所有中国高校都接受通过本校在线系统的直接申请，CSC 奖学金也可以通过中国驻当地使领馆或直接向指定高校提交。中介不是必要条件。中介真正提供的价值是材料审核、奖学金匹配和与招生办的后续跟进——在截止日期紧、或材料需要认证的情况下，这部分价值才明显。

How much does it cost to study in China for one year?

Budget roughly CNY 60,000 to 100,000 per year for a bachelor's programme, covering tuition, on-campus housing and living costs. Tuition alone is about CNY 20,000 to 40,000 per year for bachelor's, CNY 25,000 to 50,000 for master's; medicine and art cost more. On-campus dormitory runs CNY 800 to 2,000 per month, and daily living about CNY 1,500 to 2,500 per month. Figures vary by city and university, so confirm against the current year's prospectus.

在中国读一年要花多少钱？

How do I apply for the Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC)?

File through one of two channels: the Chinese embassy or consulate in your country (bilateral programme), or directly to a university that runs a CSC programme (university programme). Applications go through the official CSC portal, campuschina.org, with a separate university application where required. You need a study plan, two recommendation letters, the Foreigner Physical Examination Form, and usually HSK or IELTS scores. The window is generally January to April for a September start.

中国政府奖学金（CSC）怎么申请？

What if I do not get a scholarship?

You can still study in China. Beyond CSC there are provincial scholarships, university-level scholarships, and Confucius Institute scholarships, each with its own deadline and eligibility. Many universities also grant partial tuition waivers based on academic record. If nothing comes through, the self-funded route is open year-round within each university's application window, and total cost is roughly CNY 60,000 to 100,000 per year.

拿不到奖学金还读得起吗？

可以。除 CSC 之外还有省级奖学金、校级奖学金和孔子学院奖学金，各有独立的截止日期和资格条件。很多学校还会按学业表现给予部分学费减免。如果都没有拿到，自费通道在各校申请窗口内一直开放，一年总花费大约 6 万到 10 万人民币。

What is the JW202 form?

JW202 is the Visa Application Form for Study in China, issued by the Chinese university after you are admitted. You need the original to apply for a student visa, so the school posts it to you. Together with the admission letter it is the core document for the X1 or X2 visa application at a Chinese embassy or consulate.

JW202 是《外国留学人员来华签证申请表》，由录取你的中国高校在录取后签发。申请学生签证必须提交原件，所以学校会邮寄给你。它和录取通知书一起，是在中国使领馆申请 X1 或 X2 签证的核心材料。

What is the difference between an X1 and an X2 student visa?

X1 is for programmes longer than 180 days; X2 is for 180 days or less. With X1 you must convert it into a residence permit at the local exit-entry administration within 30 days of arrival, and that permit is what lets you stay and travel in and out of China. X2 is a short-stay visa and does not need conversion, but it cannot be extended indefinitely.

X1 和 X2 签证有什么区别？

X1 适用于学习超过 180 天的项目，X2 适用于 180 天以内。持 X1 入境后必须在 30 天内到当地出入境管理部门换取居留许可，这张居留许可才是在华长期停留和多次出入境的凭证。X2 是短期签证，不需要换居留许可，但不能无限期续签。

What do I have to do after arriving in China?

Three things within the first weeks: register your residence with the local police station within 24 hours of moving into your dormitory or apartment, complete the university's registration and medical check, and convert your X1 visa into a residence permit within 30 days. Missing the residence registration is the most common avoidable problem international students run into.

到中国之后还要办什么？

Do I need HSK to study in China?

Only if you study in a Chinese-taught programme. Those usually require HSK level 4 (180 points or above) and often level 5 for competitive majors. English-taught programmes do not ask for HSK; they ask for IELTS around 6.0 or TOEFL around 80 instead. Some universities accept a degree taught in English as proof and waive the test.

去中国留学需要 HSK 成绩吗？

只在中文授课项目里需要。这类项目通常要求 HSK 四级（180 分以上），热门专业往往要五级。英文授课项目不要求 HSK，而是要求雅思约 6.0 或托福约 80。部分学校接受以英语授课的学位作为语言证明，可以免考。

What is the CSCA and who has to take it?

CSCA stands for China Scholastic Competency Assessment. It is a standardised test used by a growing number of Chinese universities to evaluate international undergraduate applicants, covering subjects such as Chinese, mathematics, physics and chemistry. Not every university requires it; check the prospectus of the programme you are applying to. Because the format is still new to many applicants, practising with past-paper-style mock exams is the most efficient preparation.

CSCA 全称 China Scholastic Competency Assessment（中国学测），是越来越多中国高校用来评估国际本科申请者的标准化考试，科目包括中文、数学、物理、化学等。并非所有学校都要求，以你申请项目的招生简章为准。由于多数申请者对题型还不熟悉，用模拟题熟悉题型是最高效的准备方式。

Are there English-taught programmes in China?

Yes, and the number is growing. Most leading universities offer English-taught bachelor's and master's programmes, concentrated in engineering, business, computer science, medicine and international relations. Quality varies a lot between universities, so check whether the programme is run by a regular school or a dedicated international college, and confirm the language of instruction for every core course in the prospectus.

中国有英文授课的项目吗？

有，而且数量在增加。多数重点高校都开设英文授课的本科和硕士项目，集中在工程、商科、计算机、医学和国际关系等方向。不同学校之间质量差别不小，建议先确认该项目由常规学院还是专门的国际学院承办，并在招生简章里核实每一门核心课程的实际授课语言。
